Historic Industrial District - An Urban Exploration
Discover the industrial layers of Tbilisi — a side of the city shaped by concrete, collapse, improvisation, and constant reinvention. The tour begins at a strange-looking Soviet railway bridge overlooking a tangle of train tracks — some abandoned, some still in use — where rust and steel meet the occasional passing train. From here, we step into neighborhoods that reveal what happened after the Soviet Union fell: improvised extensions grafted onto apartment blocks, extra rooms suspended over facades, balconies enclosed in creative (and sometimes questionable) ways. The architecture isn’t polished — it’s practical, chaotic, and deeply human. We pass residential buildings many would call “ugly,” worn down by time yet still alive with laundry lines, conversations, and stubborn resilience. The route includes the former Park of the Achievements of National Economy, today known as Expo Georgia, where grand Soviet pavilions stand among fading mosaics and monumental decorative panels. Here, stories unfold — of industrial ambition and sudden collapse, of the harsh 1990s, and of the creativity that reshaped the city from the ground up.A local bazaar adds another layer: vegetables beside chocolates, clothes next to fish and meat, sunglasses near a car wash. In winter it freezes, in summer it swelters — chaotic, improvised, completely alive. Those curious can pause for an optional taste before we move on.
Along the way, fragments of public art appear — fading reliefs, bold graffiti, a massive mural overlooking the district. Spaces once built for ideology now speak in many different voices. The walk continues to an almost
abandoned railway station, once busy with departures, now suspended in stillness. Rusted tracks and empty platforms hold the echoes of another era. We end at the so-called “Allbus” station — where trains, metro,
and intercity buses collide in restless rhythm. It isn’t polished or picturesque. But it is raw, functional, and unmistakably Tbilisi.
